Zaireeka, Revisited

I saw Dave yesterday, and he brought me the recording he made when we all listened to Zaireeka at Stu’s house, some three months ago. Been a little while!

As a summary, Zaireeka is a four CD album made by The Flaming Lips, and it’s designed to be played using four separate CD players, all sort of "synched up" to one another. But since speeds vary from machine to machine, the overall effect is different, everytime it’s played.

Oh and hey! I’ve had some pictures from that night I’ve been saving up, just for this occasion! Did a little digging around, and pulled the audio into Flash while I was at it. Thought I’d recreate the moment. I pulled the audio into Flash, and it should stream fairly quickly. Keep in mind that this was recorded in the middle of the room, and picked up people talking as much as it picked up all four CD Players. Still, it should give you a sense of what the night was like. It’s a fun thing to try, regardless of whether you like the Flaming Lips or not. :)

Julie, looking into the other room. I think Stu is getting ready to "synch" one of the CD players. All four of the CD Players are supposed to "start" at the same time, and there’s a voice that comes out of each one that declares itself… "Track Number One… track number two…"

Gretchen, bonding with Nebula.

Mike, Phil (aka Twitch) and Lisa. I think this is the first night I ran into Lisa, and developed a rather large crush on her ever since. I should have said hello, but I was rather immobilized on marijuana. :|

Dave and Gretchen, focusing on Stage Left.

Kent, manning one of the CD Players. What was really cool about the whole setup was that, if you moved to a different seat… the sound and experience was completely different.

Me, slurping on a Bass.

Chris, who I’ve met before but got to talk with at length at this party. Good guy, and makes some really killer fucking lamps. There was talk of Justin working on his web site, but I’m not sure where that stands now… Chris does some excellent work.
