Troubleshooting Goes Well… I Guess?

This is a picture of "Betsy." No idea where the name came from.

I was over at Carla’s this evening, trying to help her sort out her computer woes. Apparently, after fifteen minutes of online use… her computer would freeze up. To make matters worse, today she called me and said that the darn thing wouldn’t even boot up. On startup, a tiny voice from inside the box would just repeat:

"There may be something wrong with your CPU."

I asked around, but no one I knew had heard of such a thing. Tried looking around online, but found precious little.

I headed over around 7:00 PM, and sure enough… we weren’t able to get anything on the screen. Couldn’t get far enough to even get into Safe Mode.

So… I decide to take the panels off. Because I could… uh… clean some of the dust out? While this move seemed like a logical thing to do, it felt like the eqeuivalent of lifting up a car hood and just staring at the engine.

Yup… something’s wrong in there.

We looked around a bit. Carla blew out some of the collected dust. We hooked up all the power/cords/devices again and… it booted up fine.

We installed a trial version of PC-cillin (found two viruses), as well as ZoneAlarm. All seemed to be well, and things were running smoothly for a good hour without any freezing.

I have no idea what we did, but everything seems to be working fine and dandy now.

Aaaand this would be Betty. :)

Overexcited, but in an incredibly friendly and endearing way.

Here’s Carla, who was nice enough to let me grab a photo.

In the doorway, I noticed the skeleton figurine and asked to take another photo. It was a gift to Carla from a friend who had attended Mardi Gras last year. Carla has a really cool yard area (complete with bench), and invited me back to hang out, drink beer, and people watch.

As soon as things slow down, I’m going to take her up on that offer! :)
