Today, a bunch of us are meeting up at Justin’s for an early breakfast. And after that, it’s off to the Music Box for a matinee of a film by Guy Maddin called Archangel.
En route, I stopped off at Sweet Thang (local bakery on North Ave) to pick up a a bunch of danishes (danii?). When I arrived, I found Stu and Juliet buzzing about the kitchen, and Justin attending to the stove.

When Dave arrived, he also brought a crapload of pastries. If the coffee doesn’t do the trick, the sugar will.

Justin gets artistic with the omelette making.
Sonja, a friend of Justin and Dave’s, also joined us. Stu and Juliet were able to join us for brekafast, but had their own plans for the day. Oh! Oh! Big news – I had heard this from Justin yesterday, but heard it officially from the Mullenbergs today: they’re sticking around! For another year, at least.
Awesome :)

Here’s a blurry/dark shot of the main theater at the Music Box. Quite the cool venue, and a great place to watch movies. Even though it could seat a lot, the main theater still comes off as immensely personal. And given the time of the matinee (11:00 AM), there weren’t that many people there.
Archangel was an interesting film, dealing a lot with memory and information (or the lack thereof). There are three main characters who are each looking for what they believe to be their true love, but memory factors into this search immensely. On top of that, there are several side characters and side stories that deal more in information and who has (or doesn’t have) access to it.
Maddin’s style (if I can take a stab at it, since I’ve only seen a film or two) comes across as a silent black and white film, a foreign silent black and white film, that’s then been dubbed fairly closely into English. He seems to rely heavily on archetypes, as the whole feel of Archangel feels like it’s in a foreign (albeit recognizeable/familiar) land.
