Cookout, Michael’s

Michael invited everyone over to his place for some drinks and some food. This was sort of a “tenant” party, as everyone invited was a tenant of Ted’s (my landlord). Michael does a lot of the maintenance work for all of Ted’s properties, and is the general fix-it guy.

I was a bit nervous, as I didn’t really know anyone (outside of Micahel). But once I showed up I made it a point to introduce myself and remember people’s names. I actively tried to remember everyone’s names, and really tried to say hello to everyone I saw.

On the whole, this was an incredibly extroverted night for me. I’m sort of proud of myself for this, as I just plopped down next to strangers and inserted myself into conversations.

I saw Steph and Mandy briefly, early on in the night. A bit later on Chelsea stopped in. I was able to hang out with them for a bit, but they ended up taking off after a while.

I met this girl named Heather, who apparently is a Second (or Third?) mate for some sort of cruiseliner. She works four months on, travelling, then three months off. I met Andy (who was studying marketing and copywriting), along with his girlfriend Cara (who’s looking to be a photography editor for a magazine. I met Alison (I think that’s right, maybe it’s Alicia), who’s pursuing a Ph.D. in Art History, and teaches. She once ran an art publication, and raved about how good a writer Michael was.

I also met someone… crap! Her name was Brenda maybe? Her boyfriend’s name is Eric, and he works at the Matchbox. She and I hit it off really well, and got into some cool conversations about cigarettes, writing (turns out she studied creative writing for a bit as well), literature, and teaching. Good stuff.

Check out the demolition wall. Michael says that the neighbor kids like to smash up their toy cars, and display them here on this wall. Sort of like a graveyard, sort of like some enormous accident scene, maybe post-earthquake.

Michael’s apartment has got to be, hands down, one of the coolest apartments I’ve ever been in. There’s so much great stuff all over the place. I didn’t end up taking any pictures, but at some point I’d love to photograph the interior. So much great stuff, covering every surface!

Backyard, circ 10:00 PM.
