Game Night

Chelsea and I had plans to hang out tonight and play video games. She brought over her PS2, and I have to tell you how much I now want one. So. Much. Fun.

We started off the night eating some sushi at Pacific Cafe. I felt a bad about being super late when we had concert plans a few weeks back, so this was my attempt at making up.

The whole time, she was futzing with her new cellphone. It’s one of the ones that has a camera built into it, and so it also has this feature where it’ll display a picture of the person who’s calling. She took a photo of me eating soup so now, whenever I call, there’s this thumbnail version of me shoving a spoon in my mouth and a big piece of seaweed hanging off my lip.

Classy.

We were out and about a good deal, despite the fact that our big goal was to loaf around and veg. We hit a gamestore looking for a generic PS2 memory card (no luck). We had no luck in Target, but Chels did end up getting a Skull Pez dispenser.

And it glows in the dark.

At this point, the night is pretty much considered a success.

Before heading back to my place, we pick up some Johnny Walker Red, a big of chips, and some Nacho Cheese. Mmmmmm Nacho Cheese.

One of the games I’ve been hearing about lately is Katamari Damacy. Here’s the quick synopsis: the King of All Cosmos (your father) accidentally destroys all the stars in the sky. You, being both his pint-sized son and prince, are then commanded to replace all the stars? How? Well, you roll shit up in a big ball, until it’s large enough to become a star.

You’d think this would make for a boring game, but you’d be totally fucking wrong.

This game rocks! Anything smaller than you, you can roll over and it sticks to your ball (making it grow that much more). Anything bigger, well… if you hit something hard enough, small bits of what you collected fall off. Over time though, as your ball gets bigger, you can pick up more and more stuff. Where you start off by rolling over pins and coins and gum, you eventually get to the point where you’re rolling over cats and chairs and fences. The game goes on like this, where you get bigger and bigger and bigger.

Penny Arcade has a great comic about this game.

Fun stuff. We traded turns, going back and forth between levels. The whole night, we stuck with this game (and 1-player mode). There’s a head-to-head game, but we never got around to that. The first player pretty much sucked us in.

The soundtrack is bizarre, and oddly compelling.

God dammit. I want a Playstation now.
