Andy’s Deli

On our way back from Foundation Gallery last Sunday, Chris and I both passed by this deli on Division. We both remarked about how we wondered about the food, and right then and there decided we would have lunch here this week. Around noon, we met up with Justin and found ourselves ordering sandwiches inside this cozy little Polish deli.

Here’s the weird thing: inside, I had no idea what to order. And while I’ve lived with two vegetarians, I’m still a carnivore (I tend to prefer omnivore). But standing there, staring at all the meats… I suddenly had no idea what to get. I was standing there, looking into the glass cases – and I didn’t recognize anything.

I ended up ordering a roast beef sandwich, not, I should say, because I wanted a roast beef sandwich. But I ordered it because that’s all I could *think* of. Totally weird. I think the fact that a lot of Polish was being spoken around me, along with the menu (Sandwiches: $3.99), threw me off a bit.

The three of us lucked out and got a seat inside (there are about 4 tables total in this tiny area). I must say – great, HUGE sandwiches here. I didn’t necessarily want a roast beef sandwich at the start, but I was happy I ordered it by the time we left. The sandwiches themselves are just utterly huge (the phrase, gross as it sounds, “fist of meat” is what I thought of).

The meal, in short, bested me. I could only eat half the sandwich, and had to take there rest home. Additionally, I had my first Pierogi thanks to Justin. Great stuff! Many months back, I had seen a piece on Wild Chicago about Pierogi Fest. I think a bunch of folks drove out to this last year and I, sadly, somehow, missed it.

Well, let me make this declaration here and now. Not again! This year, I must attend Pierogi Fest! It’s a moral imperative!

Chris and Justin, hanging out outside Andy’s. A bit down the street, we ran into Rob (who’s back from his excursion to Alaska). Turns out, he’s got a studio space right on Division.

Seeing Rob was a great way to end a lovely afternoon. Running into friends on the street is a great thing. Maybe that’s what makes the Spring and Summer months so fantastic – when the frequency of these kinds of accidental encounters is at its peak.
