Potential to Kinetic

Matt hooked me up last night, mentioning a poet that he thought I woudl dig: John Brehm. I was a bit skeptical at some of the titles at first, but there was one poem that I really got into (below). One of the first poems I read was called “The Poems I Have Not Written,” and I immediately thought to myself “Oh Christ, not another poet writing poems about poetry.”

And then I came across the poem below (entitled “The Poetry Reading”), and I just about wrote Brehm off. But as I started to read, his voice started growing on me, and by the poem’s end he had blown my socks off. I’m digging his style now, and can’t wait to read more.

It’s been good talking with writers lately. And I must say the past few days, I’ve found myself thinking more and more about getting back to it.

I’ve been wallowing a lot lately. The apartment is a wreck, and just keeps getting worse and worse. I haven’t done laundry in an age and a day. The front porch lights have burnt out, and I haven’t replaced them. I’ve run out of food, and have been ordering out a lot more than I should. There are empty coffee cups strewn about. Clothes hanging off of doorknobs and the backs of chairs.

I’m hoping the thoughts that I’m having now are positive ones, and indicate that I’m ready to switch up some of this potential energy and make it kinetic. I think it’s time that I got my shit in order, go on an errand spree, a cleaning rampage, print out my poems and tape them to the walls again.

Tonight, I went on a book-buying binge on amazon, and got a ton of poetry books (including Brehm’s collection). I’m really excited by the books that are headed my way, and can’t wait to dive into them.

Like I said. It’s been a long while with this poetry thing. Maybe, just maybe this is another start.
