DJ Monastic, Clubfoot Residency

Almost two years back, Justin did his first gig at Clubfoot. Tonight marks another pretty big turn, as he’s been given an official residency there. From here on out, he’ll be tending the sounds every Sunday evening.

Headphone hook, DJ Booth.

What I think is most impressive about Justin is his focus. After grad school (where he got his Masters in Religious Studies – in a year), he decided to teach himself code. Fast forward a few years, and he’s doing a ton of heavy programming and development, for work.

Three years back, he decided he wanted to start spinning records more; a year after that, he got his first gig at one of his favorite local haunts; a year and a half after that, he’s been offered a permanent residency. All this while holding down a rather demanding job that frequently asks more than 40 hours a week. I don’t know where he finds all the hours in the day – the man is a machine.

Out in front, I sank a few beers with Liz. Allison showed up a bit later, flush from an exciting two days at the Pitchfork Music Festival (she still had a wristband on). Howard’s there, in the back, at a nearby table.
