Ira Glass: Kill, and Enjoy the Killing

A long, long while ago (late March) TJ sent me a link to a 37 Signals post that mentioned Ira Glass talking about being “a killer.”

It was an intriguing topic, and at the time… I was just too busy to delve into it at work that day. I made a note in iGTD, and there it sat for almost two months.

I’m going through old to-do’s, and catching up a bit on old lists… trying to cross things off where I can. I saw this reminder to myself, and finally got around to reading and watching the video.

It’s good stuff, even taken outside the context of software or storytelling. “Refactoring mercilessly” is a phrase I’ve heard used often, when talking about managing time and tasks. And writers all know that editing is as much a part of the creative process as the actual writing itself.

If anyone knows what this small clip is from, I’d love to find out so I can watch the full thing.

  1. [raises hand, flailing wildly]Ooh! Ooooh! I know! I know! It’s from a series called “Ira Glass on Storytelling” (which has been cut into 4 segments on youtube, all of which you can view here) and was originally produced for Current TV as part of a collection of “Producer Training” videos (located here). Check out the Current TV link because there’s also some great insight (which I still need to watch through) offered up by folks like Dave Eggers, Robert Redford, Sarah Vowell, etc.The Ira Glass segment is inspirational straight-talk about what makes a story and, more importantly, what makes a story good and worth hearing. I think I’ve watched it 3 times through and now I’d love to get a copy on DVD. It’s great thinking material!
