In re-creating my playlist for Jason’s Cassette From My Ex project, I was having trouble finding a track from Billy Bragg called “The Only One.”
The song was released on an album entitled “Workers Playtime,” and came out in 1988. However, the only versions I could find were from the reissue from 1996 or the remastered album from 2006. None of the versions I could buy or find fit the one I remember from the tape.
I was, however, able to track down someone who had uploaded the song on YouTube. It was the version I wanted, but I didn’t know how to get the audio out of a posted YouTube video.
Thanks to a post I remembered from Lifehacker, I was able to use KickYouTube to convert the YouTube clip http://youtube.com/watch?v=HOcMZY1sB3A

Done and done! You can also pick from your choice of formats, including FLV, MP4, AVI, MPG, MP3, IPHONE. It’s nuts.
I’m not quite clear on how this is legal, or how the site makes any money at all… but it’s still up, and seems to be working just fine and dandy. I experienced a bit of lag in the conversion process, and they were down a few weeks ago… but this is still one of the easiest ways I know of to save/convert YouTube content.

this is my new favorite website!!!
For some reason it doesn’t seem to work on the UK version of YouTube, which is a little bit sucky…!Thanks for the headsup, though!
Ah, never really thought about the UK version of YouTube. My guess is that the kickyoutube.com site only pulls in stuff from the main domain (whereas the UK version has the uk.youtube.com subdomain). To be honest, I’m amazed that it’s working and legally up/running. It’s still a mystery how that site can exist.
