I Can’t Stop Listening to This: Colin Hay’s Acoustic Version of “Overkill”

For over 24 hours now, I’ve been looping the same song over and over again. It’s by Colin Hay, and entitled Overkill.

I first came across Hay and his song when I was searching around for a Billy Bragg song entitled “The Only One.” I was trying to track down the tune for Jason’s Cassette From My Ex project. The song itself came from an album by Bragg entitled “Workers Playtime.”

From there, I somehow came across the phrase “Man at Work,” and found Colin Hay’s site. Formerly the frontman for popular 80′s band Men at Work, the Overkill song I found was Hay’s solo/acoustic cover of the 80s original.

The version I heard (and saw) was from Colin’s appearance on the TV series Scrubs. While I’ve only seen a few episodes here and there, I always love watching the show.

To my shame, I’ve used KickYouTube to extract the audio from the video clip, and have been looping that on iTunes (and my iPod). Depsite the fact that Justin gave me a copy of the Hay’s album… I’ve still so far resorted to looping just the extracted mp3.

It’s the sonic equivalent of turning down fancy scotch, saying instead “No, I’m ok. This homemade hooch I made using fermented potatoes and an orange rind is just fine, thanks.”

Here are a few scenes from the show, featuring Hay’s acoutstic version of Overkill:
