Some time ago, I happened across a blog called Youku Buzz, a kind of YouTube-ish site but based in China. The videos are always pretty sluggish, as the data is halfway around the world, but the content generally seems to be odd stuff that I’d not normally see anywhere else.
Case in point: Jeffrey Lau’s Metallic Attraction: Kungfu Cyborg.
I’m not familiar with the term shanzhai, and ended up having to look it up on Wikipedia. While the movie is (I guess) meant to be a parody, the trailer for it keeps that part pretty subtle.
What I love most about the trailer is how it just slowly builds and builds. The first 30 seconds seem normal, but then things just get piled on and on. But each additional layer gets added slowly, which makes for a great effect.
Jeffrey Lau was apparently the producer of Kung Fu Hustle, which I loved. So I’m hoping this movie is in line with Stephen Chow’s sense of humor and style.
Whatever it is, it’s weird…
