Chicago Blizzard 2011: Aftermath

I was up super early this morning, and headed to the gym around 6AM. While I did shovel out my spot yesterday, I didn’t go so far as to claim dibs on the space by putting a chair or two to save it. I did it briefly, when I first moved to Chicago… but haven’t really done it ever since.

Weirdly, if ever there was a time… post-blizzard would be it. But I decided to roll the dice, and figured I was out earlier than most others. Well, after an hour or so when I returned… I found my spot taken. So it goes.

Luckily though, I found an empty (unclaimed) spot somewhat nearby. As I parked in it, I felt a little guilty and wrong. Given all the snow we’ve had lately, it makes perfect sense to me why some people want to call dibs on their space. If you’ve spent 30+ minutes digging your car out, you definitely want to not have done all the work in vain. But at the same time, “dibs” screws the rest of us. If memory serves, I think people have been shot before in Chicago… over claimed parking spaces.

The City of Chicago turns a blind eye, but there are others who are looking for a Chair Free Chicago.

Spotted this on my way home from the gym. The sign on the trashcan reads “41 weeks pregnant.”

At the Logan Square Blue Line stop, a lot of the walkway near the entrance was cleared… but the snow was piled up against all the trees.

Nearby, CTA workers were clearing the sidewalk and throwing obscene amounts of salt onto the snowpiles.
