Earth Hour 2011: Photos Before and After

Over the weekend, people worldwide celebrated Earth Hour by turning off their lights for one hour, starting at 8PM local time. The Atlantic has a very large and very lovely set of photographs, documenting the before and after.

Each image shows what it was like, before Earth Hour began. By clicking on the image, the photo will fade and be replaced by what it looked like after all the lights were turned off. Well, most of them anyways.

The photographs are great, but the transitions are even better. It’s a basic jQuery animation, but used artfully and to great effect.

Sadly, I totally blanked it this year. I generally try to be good about things on a regular day, but missed out on doing this with… well, the rest of you. Boo.

  1. We totally forgot too. I was ready to have a big Earth Hour thing with the kids – some candles, stories, and drawing in the dark – and the weekend was so crazy that by the time I remembered it was midnight on Saturday. Boo to us too. Maybe we’ll try to do an honorary one in the next couple weekends…
