Amazon Prime Air Promises to Deliver Packages in 30 Minutes Via Autonomous Drones

I’ve been away from the computer the entire weekend, and just happened to spot this tidbit today: Amazon is looking to delivery packages via autonomous drones. It looks very much like an April Fool’s joke, but the more I see… the more I think this is an actual thing.

While this is not happening right now, the goal here seems to be decreasing the wait between order and delivery, down to 30 minutes. Which is pretty mind-boggling, if you think about that number. Granted, it will likely be items that are 5 lbs or less, but still… 30 minutes, delivered to your door? That’s just nuts.

More details via 60 Minutes.

The timeline on this seeing the field seems to be 4-5 years, but as of now it seems that the largest hurdles are regulatory and not technological. With this on the horizon and experiments with food delivery in LA and Seattle (via Amazon Fresh), it is going to be very interesting to see what Amazon will be doing in the next few years.
