One Neighbor, Nine Cats, and a Promise

Walking to get some beer, I came across a woman leaning against her fence and about three cats lying around on the sidewalk, immediately in front of her. I stopped to pet one of them, and joked about it being a cat party. The two of us fell to talking, and that’s how I got to meet Corrie (I hope I got her name right).

We talked for a long time about her cats and, while she introduced me to about 5 of them that walked by, there were 4 more somewhere that I didn’t get to see. She’s got stories for nearly every one of them: one who got lost crossing the street two years ago and who, to this day, won’t cross the street at all; one who hangs out on the neighbor’s doorsteps and pretends to be locked out so that people will give her food (on hearing this, I knew immediately which cat she was talking about); one cat who got lost right as a big snowstorm hit and managed to find her way home despite being out in the cold for fifteen days.

Yet another reminder to myself: bring the camera with you. Always. Because you never know.

As I was leaving, I found out that Corrie has a new computer and was having problems getting a printer hooked up, was curious about domain names and the like. I offerred to help out at some future point and she said she’d take me up on it.
