You Are, I Am
You Are Beautiful is doing a show at Open End Gallery, entitled You Are, I Am. I’m going to be helping out near the entrance, and taking photos of people as they come in.
Each person is going to get a sticker/nametag that they can fill out. And, if they’re interested in participating, I’m snapping shots all night. I think I’m going to be getting a ton of people, and this is particularly exciting. I’m looking to create some sort of slideshow/gallery thing in Flash, once I have all the photos.
Secretly, I’m a bit nervous. I don’t feel like I know what I’m doing with a camera, as all I really do is point and shoot, most times. But I got some good advice from my friend Dipti tonight, and I’m going to show up there early tomorrow to check out the space, try out a few things. I’m nervous, but in a good way. I just really want this to come out well, because I think it’s just going to be so damn neat when everything’s said and done.
I met with the folks from You Are Beautiful a while ago on collaborating, and this was the idea that we came up with. What I love about this is that it dips into my whole fascination with repetition and variation.
I’ve always thought that if you showed me 100 photos of the same thing (a hundred chairs, or a hundred bottle caps) – it’d be fascinating because of the variation. They’re all thematically linked, but it’s the slight variants in each that you’d notice, and be drawn to.
I feel that with these photos tomorrow, it’s going to be similar. Everyone will have their own sticker, but what they write will vary. Their expressions will vary. The variations from one to another will be awesome, regardless of how well I do in taking their pictures. Can’t wait – this is going to be really, really fun.
Swing by if you can make it. I’ll take your picture if you do.
