Aimee and Lucille
My friend Aimee (a colleague from my MFA days) is teaching at SUNY Fredonia, and recently posted some photos of visiting poet Lucille Clifton.
Seeing the broadside that Aimee designed, it made me remember how much I loved Clifton’s writing… and this poem of hers in particular.
I was lucky enough to attend a reading of hers, a few years back. I had a blast, and going there alone almost made the experience that much more special to me. I remember running to the reading in the midst of a large thunderstorm, with no umbrella; I remember getting there on time, but being pretty soaked to the bone.
I think it was that reading, actually, where I first came across her poem “won’t you celebrate with me.” If you’re not familiar with it – by all means, go read it RIGHT NOW. Those final lines… man oh man, they take my breath away.
If you ever glimpse her name or see that she’s giving a reading, I highly recommend attending. You won’t regret it. There’s a reason why I mention her so much on here. She’s just so good.
wow. fuck. that’s a really beautiful poem. thanx fe.
