Saying Goodbye to the Merchandise Mart

Today was our last day in the Merchandise Mart. I’ve been pretty busy with work all week, so the fact that we’re leaving here still… still hasn’t fully sunk in yet. I had to stop working on things at around noon, and finally got around to packing up my desk and all the random things I’ve collected over the years.

Looking out at all the orange crates, I got a strong sense of déjà vu: I remembered me, Ben and Chris standing in the same spots… moving in to this office for the first time, unpacking all our orange crates.

Crazy that it’s already been two years.

My desk, mid-way through the packing process.

On our way back from lunch, Bryan and I decide to give the Mart one final hug goodbye (Jane is around the corner).

This is a pretty great building. Lots of good memories with this building. From exploring the rooftop, to secretly travelling down to the lower basement to Starbucks Snowmen promotions to Flying Wallendas to giant chairs to indoor Thunderdomes, whether it’s daytime or nighttime… this building is like no other.

The developers, trying to figure out what to keep and what to throw away, running little if-else statements in their heads. L to R it’s Kashif, Matt, Sean and Bee.

My desk, back to the way it was before I arrived.

All afternoon, we were playing sappy, sad songs like Cinderella’s Don’t Know What You’ve Got ‘Til It’s Gone, Mötley Crüe’s Home Sweet Home, and It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday by Boyz II Men.
