Listening to Rilo Kiley, Thinking About Ukeleles
Over my vacation, as I was working on the computer… I was listening to a lot of Rilo Kiley (Official Site | Wikipedia). I’m not sure who originally turned me on to them (I think it was either TJ or Masha). But I was looping the crap out of their “More Adventures” album, and really started getting hooked on their song “Ripcord.”
Tonight, I was thinking about ukeleles, and wondering how much a good uke costs. I can’t seem to get Ripcord out of my head, and I’m feeling a desire to learn how to play/sing this song with the ukelele.
While Liz was off at class this evening, I spent a good hour or so just surfing around the web. Surprisingly, though I was off on vacation for most of a week… I didn’t really browse around all that much. Even at work, most days I don’t do a lot of surfing (my RSS reader goes largely unattended).
So I found a few videos, and figured I’d share. I know the whole ukelele-YouTube meme isn’t exactly a new one… but I don’t think these videos have really made the rounds all that much.
Tonight was a lazy night, and surprisingly energizing in a way. It’s strange how just surfing around leisurely (and then posting on the blog) can be so satisfying. Not sure why, but it is.
So here are a few uekele-related videos. First, here’s a decent version of Rilo Kiley doing Ripcord.
And then, I happened across this delightful version of “Build Me Up, Buttercup” by jaaaaaaa. Make sure it watch this until 1:10… seriously.
Finally, here’s a cover of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by Danielle Ate the Sandwich. Kind of a weird intro, but she’s got a lovely voice (found this via Ektopia).
And as long as we’re on the topic of ukeleles, make sure to check out one of my favorite days from 2006: visiting Alex and Linda in Green Bay, and attending Ukelele Night at their coffee shop, Kavarna.
I’ve got several videos posted from the evening’s performance. If you’ve not heard of Lil’ Rev before, I’m definitely inviting you to take a listen.
Wow I like the girl playing by the light of the Fridge. She sounds pretty tough too wow! Also, sidenote… Jenny Lewis (singer) was a child star actress best known for her co-staring role in the epic blockbuster “The Wizard” starting Fred Savage. Also, Blake the guy playing the ukelele was also a child star delighting us each week in his role on “Solute your Shorts”… good stuff all around :)
TJ Mapes (January 27, 2009 at 8:51 am)i would argue that Jenny Lewis is best known for her role in “troop beverly hills” – a true classic.
