Celebrate Pi Day (3/14) with a Pi Day Song

Normally on Pi Day (3/14), I tend to get a fair amount of traffic to this site. A link to an old Flash project of mine gets passed around, and lots of folks tend to come by for a visit.

About 8 years ago, I made a Flash experiment called pi10k, where people can assign musical notes to specific numbers… and turn pi into music. At the time, I was learning Flash and just starting my hand at coding in Actionscript. I made the pi10k project as a way to learn a bit more about arrays.

Since Pi Day has become more of a thing, I’ve seen more and more mentions of it each year. Up until now, I’ve had lots of nice mentions of the project. But today marks the first time someone made their own song, using my Flash piece, and posted it to YouTube:

Mark, a music teacher at Redwood Day School, write this awesome song as part if his middle school’s celebration of Pi Day. I can’t tell you how excited and happy I was to see and hear this, on sitting down at my computer tonight.

I can’t tell you how proud and honored I am, to have contributed to Mark’s awesome song. The idea that some middle schoolers in Oakland might have heard notes from my Flash project? I’m totally grinning, ear to ear right now.
