The Convicts and Cats Inside the Indiana State Prison
Located in Michigan City, IN, the Indiana State prison is a maximum security detention facility, where approximate 70% of the inmates are there for murder. What started as a chance encounter with a litter of kittens has since transformed into an officially sponsored program.
The blog post is by Diana Partington, who runs a website called Cat Odyssey. Don’t be dissuaded by the site’s design, the post itself is well worth reading.
I’ll be honest – I got choked up at several points, reading over this article. It seems win-win to me, as the prisoners love the program, the prison staff see the ways in which it alters inmate behavior, and the cats have all found new homes. Reading over the individual prisoner accounts was pretty moving (even moreso if you’re a cat person).
