Talking About Writing and Travel @ The Map Room

Met up with Brian a few days ago, post-work for some drinks and some catching up. We decided to meet at The Map Room, which seemed an entirely apt location, given our conversations.

We ended up talking a lot about travel, about writing, the things we do for money and the things we do for meaning. I learned that he’s heading to teach English abroad in Thailand, and will be departing the States once more come Spring/Summer.

I don’t know that I could pick up and move to another country (however temporarily), but the idea is a fascinating one. And if there’s anyone who has travel in his blood, it’s Brian. I find myself living vicariously through his travels (and especially through his writing and photography). Moving on to another country, it’ll be interesting to see what Brian’s next project will be.

Amazingly, this was my first ever visit to The Map Room. How crazy is that? It’s been a staple for I don’t know how long, but I just never had occassion to go here. Though I’m not a huge beer fan, the beer that I did have was excellent… and the feel of the bar was moderately full and subdued.

Looking back, it seems a great place to go to… to talk about the places you want to go to.
