Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

By now, many of us have played Tic-Tac-Toe to the point where it’s no longer a fun game. We can usually guess what the next best move is, and most games end in a tie.

But before you roll your eyes at taking up X’s and O’s again, check out Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe – a variant that involves not one, but nine different boards in one game.

To avoid confusion, let’s call each small area a mini-board, and the large area the main board.

The rules remain mostly the same: get three in a row, and you win the mini-board. But to win the entire game, you need to get three mini-boards in a row.

The one catch: you can’t simply move wherever you like. Your move is determined by your opponent’s prior move.

Let’s say that your opponent makes a move in the top-right corner of a mini-board. Based on that, you now have to make a move in the top-right corner of the main board.

And just like how your opponent’s move influences where you play, your move will also determine where your opponent plays next. If you make a move in the bottom-left corner of the mini-board – your opponent’s next move has to take place in the bottom-left corner of the main board.

If you’re interested in playing online, give this version a whirl.
