Walking City: Slowly Evolving, Mesmerizing Video Sculpture

Created by Universal Everything, Walking City is a constantly morphing, mesmerizing video.

With the incredible variety of textures and shapes, the audio work is actually quite fantastic as well – matching the feel and style as the video progresses.

I’d seen mention of this video online for a while now, but didn’t actually go to check it out until tonight. Really incredible stuff.

On watching this video, I was reminded of two bits of writing on cities. The first is Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino:

The catalogue of forms is endless: until every shape has found its city, new cities will continue to born. When the forms exhaust their variety and come apart, the end of cities begins.

The other bit of writing I was reminded of was Neil Gaiman’s essay on cities, which I first read when playing SimCity 2000 and built my first library. It’ll be familiar to fans of Sandman, which I was coincidentally reading at the time.

// PS: Wow, Universal Everything really has some other really fantastic work posted on their site. Go look around and lose some time!
