Old Bird Bath, New Yard
The backyard has really bloomed, following the rains these past few weeks. We set up an old bird bath a few weeks ago, and at the time… the ground was pretty barren given all the work that took place, when we had the trees removed.
Now though? The backyard resembles a small forest, and there’s green sprouting up as far as the eye can see. It’s grown so much, it’s almost reaching the lip of the bird bath!
One of these days, I suppose I’m going to have to do something with all this growth. I don’t even know what this stuff is that’s growing out of the ground – it’s not grass, and seems maybe like a flower of some kind? It’s massive, and it’s everywhere. I worry that if I leave it unattended, it’ll turn our backyard into a mini jungle.

Felix, it looks to me like a massive patch of day lilies, AKA ditch lilies. We have a sea of them in our backyard, behind the pond. Someday I’m going to get rid of them, but they serve as decent ground cover for now. They spread like crazy though! Also, if that is indeed what they are, rest assured that if you and Liz get too hungry you can dig up the tubers and eat them. They look like little teeny sweet potatoes. I cannot vouch for the taste myself… haven’t gotten *that* hungry yet!
Allison (May 11, 2014 at 9:19 pm)Thanks, Allison! I’d heard the name day lilies before, and these guys are just everywhere. Their rate of growth is really quite amazing. It’s still hard for me to grasp how quickly the back yard went from brown to green.
