Sick Days and Little Sleep

It’s such an odd thing, to be sick with a cold at the start of summer. Liz got hit with this thing first, and she was out for a good part of last week. And on Friday, though I was coughing a bit beforehand… I guess I started my slow descent.

Combined with my allergies, I’ve been a wreck of coughing and nose blowing. What’s made this worse is that in the evenings, it’s been near-impossible for me to fall asleep. If I don’t sleep with the CPAP machine, I’ll end up snoring and wake Liz up. But with the machine on, it irritates my already congested sinuses even more, making me cough nonstop (which also wakes Liz up).

For however bad it’s been for me, it’s been doubly bad for her – as all my sneezing and coughing has been preventing her from sleeping continuously. At one point, I even went so far as to go upstairs to sleep on the floor, to spare her from all the constant noises I’d be making.

Yesterday, I took the day off of work figuring I could rest up. As it turns out, I got worse as the day continued. Liz told me this is the same arc she experienced, a few days being in the “slightly sick” stage, and then a surprising downward turn. Despite me riding a constant see-saw of NyQuil and DayQuil, yesterday evening had me feeling more out of sorts than I’d been the last few days.

Thankfully, something broke late in the evening. And I woke up feeling not as sick. Still taking today off, but resting up and feeling much improved. My throat is still sore and hurts from all the coughing, but I’m doing that less and less. It’s just nice to be able to breath again, without feeling like I need to hack up a lung.
