Hyperlapse: Timelapse App That Steadies Video, from Instagram

I first heard about Hyperlapse a few weeks ago. At the time, I thought it was something that was still being researched, and was a ways away from being seen out in the wild. Here’s the first example I saw:

Turns out, Instagram’s been hard at work on this as well – as they just released an app called Hyperlapse, that lets you take time-lapse video (and stabilizes it for you).

The effect is incredibly cool, but I suspect it’ll be a few short months before we’ll be inundated with commercials that utilize this effect. In fact, I was convinced that this effect would have gotten to us first via commercials… so I’m quite surprised to see this in the hands of consumers so quickly.

I’ve tried a few videos out, and the app really does a nice job of stabilizing things. Though they weren’t very exciting videos to begin with (me just walking through the office here, or walking down State Street). It’ll be interesting to see what people do with this app, once more folks download it.

It’s funny – between this app and Ingress, I’m finding a very interesting bit of role reversal. Rather than me downloading apps because I move around so much, the apps I’m downloading are prompting me to move around more.
