Telltale Games: The Walking Dead Game, Season 1
When I should have been working on Saturday, I spent a lot of time playing video games. Quite frankly, I blew a lot of time playing the first season of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead. The game is based on the popular Walking Dead comics, taking place in the world focusing on a set of newer characters.
The story has you playing as Lee Everett, a convicted felon on his way to prison when the outbreak begins. While being transported, the car collides with a zombie and ultimately provides Lee with a means of escape.
After escaping he encounters a young girl named Clementine, who comes to his aid. He takes her under his care for the remaining episodes, as he is unsure of whether her parents are dead.
The interesting thing about the game play is, ultimately, the decision making process. There are a few moments where you fire a gun and things of that nature – but the bulk of this game resides in the story, and the decisions you make at critical points. It’s a lot like a Choose Your Own Adventure, in many ways – though with some great graphics, and way more zombies (and gore).
I’d heard a lot of great things about this game, and after playing for a while I totally see why. The characters are great, and a lot of the scenarios/decisions mirror the difficult moral choices encountered in the comic. Whereas a lot of games nowadays have ultra slick cinematics in between scenes, the gameplay and cut scenes are remarkably similar.
I’m playing now on my Mac, but it seems that the game is available for a wide range of consoles and platforms. Even if you’re not familiar with the comic, I think this is a great game worth checking out.
