First Experience with Soylent
I received my shipment of Soylent a long while ago, but it’s been sitting in the kitchen for some time. It arrived right around the same time that I had that developmental cyst in my mouth. At that time, given how much discomfort I was in, it just didn’t seem like the right time to try out something new.
In between all that – other things cropped up. I felt that if I were to start trying out Soylent as a meal, I’d just be diving in and doing it 100% (and didn’t feel ready for that). I don’t know why, but that thought made me hesitant… so I kind of procrastinated trying it out.
Of course, I could have just done what I’m doing tonight: just try it out for one meal. Not sure why I couldn’t get past that “all or nothing” approach. Tonight, I mixed up some for Liz and I to try out – just one meal, to see how we liked it.
Of course since the creators were all Silicon Valley people, the booklet that comes with Soylent is called “Release Notes” and includes a changelog.
Each box contains a group of oil bottles.
Inside, it’s a combination of canola and fish oils.
Each box also contains 7 packages of the Soylent powder. Combined together, one package + one bottle = 3 meals.
And yes, it’s kind of funny that we have a bowl of popcorn in the background there.
The finished product. The recommendation is to allow this mixture to chill in a refrigerator for 2-3 hours before consuming, or to pour over ice if consuming immediately. We made this right when got home, and tried it out several hours later.
The taste of Soylent to me had a slightly sweet note to it. Like a very light/faint vanilla, but not very strong at all. The consistency was, unfortunately, a little chalky. It tasted a bit gritty. I didn’t mind it too much, but I could see that turning some people off.
I think I waited too long to try it out, as I didn’t start drinking the Soylent until I was pretty darn hungry. And after downing almost two glasses… I waited for a while, and found myself still hungry. So I ended up making some toast.
For the remainder of the night, I wasn’t hungry at all. So I think it really did the trick – but perhaps I shouldn’t wait until I’m ravenous, as it seems like it’s taking my body some time to register that I’ve “eaten.”
The chalkiness and grittiness is definitely a problem, though it’s not a dealbreaker for me. In looking around a bit, some folks are suggesting more water or leaving the mixture in overnight before drinking. I may stick with this basic formula for a while, before trying anything fancy (like adding bananas or ice or peanut butter, and mixing things in a blender).
The up side is that there’s a whole bunch of folks out there customizing and sharing recipes, so if we want to tinker… we’ll have some good info to check out.
