Though the day started out chilly, we ended up outside a great deal doing yard work. I think the morning clocked in around the mid-30’s, but it warmed significantly by the time noon rolled around.
I’ve not been able to mow the lawn much these past few weeks, as it’s dark by the time we get home during the week. And the past few weekends have been a little busy. Despite this, the grass has started to slow way down, and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
I learned from Julie that it’s a good idea to mow your lawn once (super low), prior to winter. If you have too much grass and it gets under a blanket of snow… it could cause rotting. After today, I might have one final pass before putting the lawn mower away until the Spring.
We’ve had a lot of leaves collect out front: in the driveway, along the sidewalk, in our front yard, and in the parkway. What I thought would be a quick clearing ended up taking a few more bags than expected.
Liz ended up sweeping out the leaves with a broom (she didn’t want to risk damaging her plants with a rake), and I ended up using two dustpans to transport everything from the ground to the bag. It turned out to be a pretty good workflow.
With the yard clippings, we managed to stuff a lot into our bags.
And also cleared out a lot of branches, and a few plants that were not going to make it through the winter.
We had nothing on our neighbors, though – who were out en masse working on clearing their backyard earlier in the day.
Celebratory drink. It definitely looks a lot nicer, with all the dead leaves cleared away.
It’s kind of amazing to look back at all the transformations, at what the backyard, front yard, and parkway used to look like.
