Nippon Sharyo: Made in the USA
Spotted this placard in the Metra car, as I was riding home. The Japanese-sounding name seemed a little out of place on a railcar, so it caught my attention.
On doing some research, I learned that Nippon Sharyon USA belongs to Nippon Sharyo Ltd. Not only that, the parent company has been making railroad vehicles for over 100 years.
You can view all the trains they manufacture (the EMU Highliner is the one I ride to/from work).
Interesting side note: in 2010, when bond funds became available, Metra placed an order for 160 new Highliner cars. As a part of this order, Nippon Sharyon USA ended up establishing a new railcar factory in Rochelle, Illinois.
So – made in America, after all.
