Closing the Basement Window

Last night was a whirlwind evening – Bob came over, and was helping to fix a small plumbing issue. When Liz and I got changed and downstairs, all three of us shifted our focus to framing up and closing a window near the East wall.

It was previously serving as a kind of ventilation point. But we had a really flimsy cover on it, and a lot of cold air coming in. Despite what you see here (the iron bars)… it wasn’t all that secure at all.

The window, cleared out. We also dug out a lot of material within the windowsill itself. Liz and I mixed up a bag and a half of concrete, which we added in.

The window, framed out and filled with insulation. Not pictured: a piece of plywood on the outside, that still needs to get affixed.

Sealed up! Remember those plywood boards we prepped about a month ago? It was their time to shine.

This is another huge milestone, to me and Liz. With this window filled, along with our new security door – the basement feels that much more solid, our house that much more private and secured. It’s a really great feeling.

We worked pretty late (stopping close to 10PM). Bob was remarking how many different things went on tonight: working a bit with PVC pipe, some painting, sawing plywood and 2×4’s, mixing and pouring concrete.

Not too shabby for a Tuesday evening.
