Tuesday Funk #103
Since I planned on attending Tuesday Funk tonight, I got over to the area a little early. Coming over right after work, I got a cup of coffee and settled down at La Colombe for a bit of writing time. Not a lot of new stuff, but mostly editing. A little noodling around.
When it got close to 7PM, I headed over to Hopleaf to grab a seat. Tables filled up quickly, and I ended up finding myself over near the corner.
Didn’t get many good photos, but enjoyed listening to the readers. Speaking tonight were: Naomi Buck Palagi, Lori Barrett, Steve Bellinger, Tori Szekeres, and Edward McClelland.
I was sitting next to Steve, who was prepping some notes before he got onstage. I chatted with him briefly about science fiction, and about Star Trek (note: check out his bio).
Only later, after hearing Steve read an excerpt from his book, did I realize his story was about time travel. I wanted to ask him his thoughts on Ron Mallett, and whether Mallett’s work influenced him at all.
Of the readers, my favorite was Lori Barrett. She had a great story about a childhood crush, and captured the mental and political awkwardness that comes with adolesence. Barrett had the audience laughing with her the whole time, and really had the room in the palm of her hand.
During the intermission, Erin and Melissa sat down next to me. We fell to talking quite quickly and easily, covering a lot of topics like improv, the nature of comedy, creative nonfiction, simplifying by throwing things away, and blogging.
At one point, I was told I would have made a good professor – which was nice praise to hear.
Erin also took a photo of the Moleskine notebook I had with me. She was more interested in the quotation on the cover – my favorute couplet from Roger Mitchell’s poem Four Hundredth Mile. I also showed them some photos of my trip to Amsterdam, and where I got the engraving done.
I always have a struggle, right before attending public events like this. I’m much more introverted and have a harder time being in crowds or around people. But afterwards, I do generally enjoy it, and I’m glad I ventured out. Even if my inclination is to head straight home after work.
I had the chance to read my poems at Tuesday Funk last year, and I’m excited to be reading again next month. I’ll post up more info as the date gets closer.
