Liz Birthday Dinner, Won Fun Chinese
For Liz’s birthday dinner, we went out to Won Fun Chinese. A funny thing – we were just in this area the night before, as we came out after my 20×2 Chicago talk. We were running around in the rain, looking for a place to eat… and ended up a block away. Funny that less than 24 hours later, we were back.
The exterior was fairly unassuming. When we arrived, the curtain on the right wasn’t open… so it made it even harder to locate. The only tell-tale sign we were at the right place was the neon “Chinese Food” sign above the door, and a dragon adorning the door.
The restaurant itself is fairly small/narrow. We were seated near the front, in a small alcove. I was hoping we’d be sitting further inside, to be able to take in the room decor, but I guess those larger booths were reserved for larger parties.
For drinks, I got the Lychee-Rose Martini (vodka, rose water, lychees) and Liz got the Open Says Me (sesame gin, coconut, ginger, lime). Both were quite delicious – and I have to say Liz’s drink was particularly interesting – it wasn’t what I expected from a cocktail, and I liked it more than I thought I would.
As appetizers, we got both the BBQ Bao and the Chinese Bacon Buns (Liz is a big fan of bbq pork bao). For entrees, we shared the Foie Gras Fried Rice and the Dry Fried Green Beans.
