E.T. and Yoda Exist in the Same Universe
Ever since Comcast tried to continue the story of E.T., I’ve been thinking about this comment on MetaFilter.
As a backstory, here’s a scene from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. In it, we see a group of aliens that look similar to E.T. in the Galactic Senate:
The above scene was a nod from George Lucas back to Steven Spielberg, who in his movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, had this scene which was a nod to Lucas’ character Yoda:
As fun as all that is, the comment that’s been on my mind suggests that both characters exist in the same universe. In the clip from ET, there is a moment of almost recognition.
The kicker of all this is, while Yoda and ET exist in the same universe, that very same universe is one where Star Wars exists also as a fictional movie, with its own merchandise (and Halloween masks). Which kind of makes my head spin around, in a fun way.
Somewhat related: just now discovered the Tommy Westphall Universe, and it’s absolutely delightful in much the same way.
