Journey to the Savage Planet

I haven’t really done much with my Stadia subscription, beyond just playing a few rounds of Gambit in Destiny 2. I’ve been on the verge of deleting it, but then a new free game caught my eye and attention.

To clarify: most of the free games on Stadia are… fine. Nothing I got really excited by, and I’m a little hesitant to pull the trigger on dropping money for an actual game (that goes away once my Stadia account ends).

But I played a bit of Journey to the Savage Planet and got hooked. And I think I’ll be keeping that Stadia account for a bit longer now.

The overall tone is pretty campy and over the top. When logging into your computer for the first time, you’re given this identity challenge to identify yourself. You can probably get a bit of the flavor from this screen alone.

My stab at the TL;DR – you’re one of many civilian explorers, hired by Kindred Aerospace to explore new planets for human habitation. Kindred is known as the 4th best exploration company for 8 years running, but several communications indicate certain budget cuts of late.

Surprisingly, the planet you’re meant to explore has existing architectural elements – buildings and structures built by some alien hand. Which was not expected. So in addition to exploring the planet’s flora and fauna, you’re tasked with figuring out what the heck those buildings are as well.

The game reminds me a lot of No Man’s Sky, in terms of its theme. Throw in a lot of Fallout style Vault Boy material, and I think you’ll come close to this game.

The world itself is actually quite lovely and fun to explore. The campiness is mostly limited to any interactions with your employer, and the world itself is a kind of separate thing to explore and discover at your leisure.
