Easter Surprises

Liz has always had a strong love of Easter, and in particular Easter egg hunts. I never did it much as a kid, but even now… Liz still loves them a lot.

A few days earlier, I ended up running an errand and made an extra stop to Target to pick up some supplies. As a surprise, I decided I’d hide a few Easter eggs around the backyard.

So this involved me packing chocolates and things into some plastic eggs, while sitting in a Target parking lot one late afternoon. Then, hiding all the supplies in the car. Then sneaking out earlier this morning, to go get the eggs and hide them around the yard.

In addition to the eggs, I also hid a pretty large, Reese’s peanut butter bunny thing – which was pretty sizable (about the size of my hand).

I got everything placed a little before 9AM. Liz was sleeping in this morning, and I eventually told her about the eggs and we wandered downstairs around 10:30 AM or so.

On opening the kitchen door, Liz looked out into the backyard and yelled “He’s got my egg!”

This is what she saw: a squirrel who had found one of my hidden eggs, and was actively spinning it around in his hands, trying to get the thing open.

As Liz was running towards the squirrel and clapping her hands, she also noticed that a nearby egg was on the ground, open and emptied. We were, it turns out, a little late to the party (which had gotten started without us).

Liz, looking for the remaining hidden eggs (that the squirrels didn’t find).

Amazingly, we found no trace of the Reese’s peanut butter bunny, save this small piece of aluminum foil. I have to tell you – this thing was big. I’m honestly not even sure how a squirrel could have carried it off. We looked everywhere (and even on the other side of the fence, in case a squirrel pulled it under and over). Totally gone.

We don’t know if it was one squirrel, or a whole group of them. But they had a pretty good haul this morning: one solid peanut butter bunny, and one opened egg (which had two smaller chocolates). Liz described the first squirrel: “bold as brass.”

Fast forward towards the end of the day. I’ve been feeling pretty low the last few days, and Liz decided to give me a surprise as well today – by laying out a blanket and having a mini-picnic in the backyard.

The weather was, again, incredibly warm for so early in the year… and Liz felt some fresh air would do me good. Even though it was just for a brief while, it was nice to be out and about outside for a change.
