The Fisherman’s Friends: Strike the Bell
So I’m familiar with the rise of Sea Shanties in 2021, and had Wellerman stuck in my head for a hot minute.
But here’s something interesting that’s happened in my house recently. Liz has started to listen to Sea Shanties, while she’s been refinishing the vintage kitchen door.
I thought this was just a brief hipster phase for her. But every time I go into the basement to visit her, there’s a shanty playing in the background.
In a lot of ways, she’s listening to sea shanties in the same way I tend to listen to certain songs on repeat. Almost as though the repetition aids in the process, and provides a bit of momentum.
Well, somehow… one of her sea shanties actually got into my brain. And I woke up one morning with it in my head. Which feels really weird, since this is by all accounts her fault… and now it it’s something I can’t seem to get rid of.
The song is “Strike the Bell,” performed by the Fisherman’s Friends.
To make things worse, Liz has been using my Spotify account to satisfy her sea shanty urges, so there’s a ton of things in my “Recently Played” list that are shanty-esque.
It’s taken a lot of willpower to not explore the world of shanties more. But if this song is any indication, it seems like just a matter of time.
