Whisky for Christmas

While it’s unfortunate we can’t celebrate Christmas with family, I’m lucky to be able to spend the holiday day wiht Liz at home.

We’ve got a PCR test scheduled in the near future, and got to have our own little Christmas gift opening together on Christmas day, for a change.

While I’m not documenting all our gifts, I wanted to point out that among the things I received… I got three bottles if whisky! Liz said she felt that I missed some tasting opportunites during our Scotland trip – partly due to me being the designated driver, partly due to me discovering a little late that I had a preference for cask strength bourbon barrel whisky.

I’ve become a fan of Aberlour’s A’bunadh Alba. And one of the bottles Liz got me was a single cask of Aberlour 13.

Longmorn was hands down one of Liz’s favorites from our trip (specifically, the Longmorn 15 Reserve Collection). As a counter to that, she got me a Longmore 15 (1st fill barrel, and *not* sherry).

Finally – a Society bottle: Kaa’s Stare. We both weren’t certain on the reference, and after looking it up realized Kaa was the snake from Kipling’s The Jungle Book. More specifically, I think here it’s a reference to Disney’s version of Kaa.

A very interesting bottle: the more water we added, the more it opened up. And we kept tasting more and more, as we continued to explore it. Hands down one of the more complex bottles we’ve ever had, and a lot to figure out with this one.

Of course, we had to sample the gifts. We also opened up a GlenDronach bottle that Liz got when we visited the distillery (this was an 11 year old, but we were remembering how taken we were with a GlenDronach 24 we had at the Malt Room in Inverness).

We sipped a lot, and snacked on crackers and cheeses all the while. Not a bad bit of holiday cheer.
