Amazon + Grubhub

There’s been a secret project at work for some time now, nicknamed “Project Amber.” I wasn’t involved with any of it, but just heard rumors swirling here and there.

We recently had a release freeze (no deploys to production), in preparation for the Project Amber launch. Given the duration of this freeze, I knew it to be a pretty serious thing, whatever it was.

We use JIRA to track our work, and after a bit of searching… I was able to figure out what Project Amber was. Well, kinda. I had a hunch.

Today, the official news broke circa 3:00 AM. Amazon and Grubhub entered into a commercial agreement.

The deal: Amazon Prime members automatically get a free year of Grubhub+, a subscription service that normally costs $9.99 per month and gives you free delivery.

On the business side of things, this deal resulted in Amazon getting stock warrants, starting at 2% but potentially up to 15% of the company (depending on how many new diners register, through this deal).

It’s a pretty huge deal, and it’s been fascinating to hear about the ways in which we’ve prepared for the increase in traffic. Looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen, in the coming weeks.
