Eating a Sharlyn Melon

Had a small midday treat today, as Liz grabbed a ripe melon from the garden box. I have to confess – I had no idea she was growing these, so this was a total surprise.

At a glance, it looked like an orange. But the exterior was more of a rind, and felt much firmer. I’m fairly sure these are Sharlyn melons. At least, I think they are.

Cut open, the flesh was very light/white in color. But the seeds looked a lot like cantaloupe seeds.

We sliced these up like apples, removing the seeds and rind. The taste was somewhere between cantaloupe and honeydew, but much less intense – not quite as sweet. I want to say it was more on the cantaloupe side in terms of taste, but distant. The texture was slightly firm, and almost made you think of eating a very ripe pear.

Hands down, I’m a huge fan of cantaloupe. But this was a novel, light, and refreshing thing to try out. I continue to marvel at how many fruits there are, that I have yet to experience/try.
