Washing the Deck, Relocating a Post

A recent purchase: a power-washer. No one told us that when you grow up, you stop buying toys and start buying tools.

I know it’s technically a “wand,” but to me it still looks like a gun that makes “pew pew” noises.

Back deck cleared of stuff, and ready for some washing. Ideally, we’re trying to clear away as much old paint as possible, so we can repaint the whole thing.

A small task that took an embarrassingly long time for me: taking out a tall 4×4 post that was supporting the landing. And replacing it with a smaller post in the corner.

I ended up jacking up the landing slightly with a bottle nose, and notched a 4×4 to slide into the corner.

Something was a bit off in my calculations, even after trying to use a plumb bob. After dropping the landing back down, it wasn’t quite resting properly on the 4×4… and took a few attempts to get the height right.

Ultimately, the post now supports the landing (with several long screws thrown in, for good measure).

Nice to have removed the really long 4×4 post that was at the bottom of the basement stairs, holding up the landing. We got used to squeezing by it for a long while, and all it took was this small replacement. Took longer than I liked, but still long overdue.
