Franklin Room: Scotch Malt Whisky Society, February 2023 Outturn

Liz and I attended the February Outturn Preview for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, at the Franklin Room this evening.

This is our third time attending, and we’re getting more comfortable with being around folks. And feeling a bit more comfortable drinking alongside other whisky enthusiasts (who all really know their whisky).

We’re also recognizing some folks from prior events, and starting to remember some names. Which is kind of cool.

We sat at the high tops again, in the same spot from last time. We ended up meeting Matt and Lyndsey, who were really fun/easy to chat with. We learned they were heading to Scotland soon, and I tried my best to not overwhelm them with recommendations and hot takes. We were both very excited for their upcoming travels. And they’re going to Islay, to boot!

A random moment: halfway through the event, someone walked by and reached out to shake my hand. Turns out, it was Dave, someone who was sitting alongside us at the last tasting.

We both recognized one another, but struggled to remember each other’s name. And Dave said something that I thought was pretty stellar: “Memory is state dependent.” He said once we got drunk, we’d remember each other’s names.

Dave was sitting in a booth, with the same folks from before: Tony, Steve, and their graduate student friend Tomek.

It was nice to meet some new folks, and to see some familiar faces. It’s an interesting notion to imagine that perhaps some day, Liz and I will become familiar faces to someone else.

Still rolling Dave’s comment around in my head, days later. Memory is state dependent. I’ll have to remember that one.
