Matt Nathanson: Little Victories
So this is an interesting post. I’ve picked up my guitar again, after an interminably long time. It’s been sitting in a corner, collecting dust, and it’s been years since it got any attention.
But recently, I picked it up. Tuned it. And started strumming a few chords (before my fingers started to burn).
I’ve been meaning to learn Passenger’s cover of Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved.
But I got sidetracked a bit. I have a playlist of “Songs to Learn to Play on the Guitar” on Spotify, and I got fixated a bit on Matt Nathanson’s song Little Victories.
Lyrics wise, it’s not an all-time favorite for me. But it’s got a pretty straightforward chord progression, and made for an easy song to learn. And it’s within my range to sing (when I get to that point).
What’s really weird/wild to me: I remember the specific day and time, where I learned about Matt Nathanson. This was back in 2005, and it was a neighbor of Justin’s in Ukrainian Village, Michelle R.
I remember hanging out with in her apartment, and we were listening to songs on her computer. I purchased an album of his soon after, and this song has been in my head ever since. I never did get into Nathanson’s music, but this one song in particular has stayed with me.
I am definitely rusty. But after a few days here and there, I’m no longer mangling chords as badly. And at moments, my transitions are actually passable. Albeit briefly.
I have a lot of songs on my list to learn. Some and more complex, and will definitely take a great deal more time and practice. For now though, I’m just learning how to strum and hold some notes again.
