Threading the Storm

Today, we left a bit after noon to start a week plus vacation, to celebrate Liz’s upcoming birthday. We’re doing two days nearby, doing some antique shopping and revisiting some spots along Red Arrow that we visited a while back, on a previous birthday excursion.

I’ve been able to keep the real trip secret for a while from her (we head out Monday). She knows something’s up, and knows it involves hiking. But not much more beyond that.

On our way out, we seemed to perfectly hit this stretch where we were threading the edge of a storm. Not quite in it, not quite out of it. It wasn’t so much that we were running from the storm, as running alongside it.

This reminded me of our road trip to St. Louis, where we were on the cusp of a pretty terrific storm. Though this one never quite hit us.

There were some really cinematic moments, looking in the rear view mirror. Sunlight breaking through the clouds in ways I’ve only seen in movies. Was nice to be in-between worlds for a moment or two.
