Liz’s Birthday 2023, Day 2: More Antiques, and a Return to Chicago
Another day of antique malls, albeit slightly shorter. We popped into a few places, and ened up heading back to Chicago slightly earlier than expected (to try to get ahead of the traffic).
An actual steam engine that, if the tags are to be believed, actually works.
Engine detail.
Not really a flask, and more of a mini backpack.
Old portraits.
Angry: a love song.
Is he gardening, or working on making a salad? So many questions.
A curious squirrel – looks a lot like a nutcracker I’ve seen before (Austin 2016 and Chicago 2004). Why do I have these photos/memories, and to what end?
This is not a fun sounding title.
I decided not to buy this as a birthday gift for Liz. Though some prior gifts from her made the idea… tempting.
One look at this, and the phrase “cursed tome” springs to mind. And why does it say “Katie” on the cover?
Was on the lookout for a book with Tricia’s name, but no luck.
Uncle Wiggily’s Picnic.
And it’s part of a (lengthy) series? About a “bunny rabbit gentleman?”
Old Peanuts.
Before Lincoln Logs, I guess there were Miniature Timbers.
Seriously small.
There’s always one or two items that tend to re-appear, whenever I visit a lot of antique stores. I guess this trip, it’s the check printer.
Stamps.
A gas iron? This thing looks like it weighs 50 pounds, at least.
Telescope.
I guess the Baseball Game was more fun than the football game.
I have no idea where or when having a briefcase like this would be appropriate. Maybe, maybe if I’m transporting Marcellus Wallace’s soul?
Amazingly – found the squirrel nut cracker. These things are more common than I thought.
It’s a toaster. It makes a single, single piece of toast.

Mirror.
Our vacation is a bit split, with us driving back to Chicago in the late afternoon, spending the night at the house.
Tomorrow AM, we get an early ride to Midway for the hiking part of our vacation. I’ve been able to keep the details hidden from Liz, but I think eventually she’ll figure out roughly where we’re going.
A big part of her desire was to do a trip, but to not have to deal with any of the planning. To that end, I’ve put together our travel details, lodging, and activities… dinner reservations, etc.
All she really knows at this point is that we’re getting on a plane. And I’m hoping the rest of the days will be a pleasant surprise.
