Courage and Conviction
A nice last-minute birthday gift, from our trip this week: a bottle of American Single Malt whisky from Courage & Conviction, cask strength and aged in a sherry cask.
I personally have a hard time with both bourbons and American whiskey. To me, there’s a slight medicinal taste and it reminds me too much of the drinking I did while in college. To a point where I don’t really enjoy or like the taste at all, as an adult.
But Liz got to sample this whisky during our incredible meal at Houndstooth, and she wanted to make a stop on our way to the airport to pick some up.
Interesting note: Virginia is a control state, which means that the state handles the sale of liquor/spirits (while wine and beer are handled by other retailers). There are Virginia ABC stores all over, and the two that we visited were incredibly clean and had an impressive selection.
But yeah, no picking up a bottle at the grocery store or Walmart. It’s a state-run store, or nothing. We found a store on our way to Dulles, and were lucky enough to snag a bottle for the way home.
And I do have to say – I’m quite the fan. I’ve generally shied away from American whisky, but Courage & Conviction is making me reconsider that stance.
