Tough Times

A few frustrating days, trying to run lately. I’ve hit this barrier where I seem to not be able to push past the 3-5 minute mark.

For week three, the cadence has been: run 3 minutes, walk 90 seconds, run 5 minutes, walk 3 minutes. Repeat.

I can get through the first 3 minutes fine. And it’s a push, but I’ve mostly gotten through the following 5 minutes. But after that, I seem to just run out of gas. And need to stop every 2 minutes. It’s been… frustrating.

I’ve felt so dejected and unhappy with my progress, I’ve taken to repeating Week 3 all over again. Because every attempt so far… I’ve had to pause during one of the running cycles, to catch my breath.

It’s crazy to me, because for serious runners… the kinds of intervals I’m talking about would be akin to their warmups. And I’m struggling to get past 3, 5 minute intervals.

Looking back at prior attempts to run, I’m surprised (amazed, actually) that I had a moment where I was running 20 – 25+ minutes without stopping. It’s difficult to fathom that, currently when 5 seems like the upper limit.

I’m hoping time and repetition will help. And that my endurance will gradually, slowly and stubbornly, allow me to run longer without rest.

I’ve done it before, and I’m sure I can do it again. Just doesn’t quite feel that way right now.
