Ted Leo and the Pharmacists: Me and Mia

I’ve changed up my music a bit, now that I’m running slightly longer intervals. I’m not quite back to the angry Faith No More intervals (though I had one or two days of that).

Right now? It’s a lot of Ted Leo, and songs from his album Shake the Sheets. In particular, Me and Mia is a good started because it times out to a little over 3 minutes… and is a good driver.

An interesting bit of nostalgia and trivia: every time I start my runs and listen to this song, I think back to seeing Ted Leo in concert with Chris, in Logan Square, circa 2005.

There’s a section of the song, starting around 2:04… where the singing gets quiet. And it builds a little bit, until the drums and bass and guitar all kick in, around 2:26.

At that concert in 2005, the crowd was aware of this transition. And things calmed a bit, in anticipation of the slow swell. And once it kicked in full force, everyone in the auditorium was jumping up and down.

It was an incredible moment, and I was honestly afraid that the floor would give out underneath all of these people, jumping up and down (the music venue there is on the second floor).

It’s now nearly two decades later and I’m listening to this song as I’m trying to run. And when the music kicks in I’m transported back to the North side, stuffed alongside all these other concertgoers, listening to this song.

Current me is trying to keep one foot in front of the other. And the old me, even after all these years, is still jumping up and down.
